What Is Considered an Orthodontic Emergency

In a few words, any situation where your orthodontic appliance suffers damage could be considered an emergency. We’re talking about a dislodged or broken bracket, loose wires, lost aligner trays, missing elastic bands, and more.

Many patients refrain from calling their orthodontist because they don’t know if their situation is an emergency or not. Just to be clear, when in doubt, call our office for help. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Yulee Emergency Care is not just about patients wearing fixed braces. Users of Invisalign clear aligners should still be careful about any problems with their aligners.

We kid you not. Many patients lose their aligner trays because they wrap them in napkins during a meal and toss them into the trash with all the leftovers.

Anything that can cause damage to your appliance or a delay in your treatment should be considered by orthodontic patients as an emergency.

At the very least, these orthodontic emergencies are not life-threatening situations. Unlike dental emergencies, these orthodontic complications won’t require you to go in a rush to an emergency room.

Our Yulee Orthodontist team will always be here to help you with whatever you need, but if you have uncontrollable pain or swelling, you should get in touch with emergency services immediately.

How to Fix Your Braces at Home?

Considering that many of these situations are not life-threatening, you might also be relieved to know there are some DIY solutions for most problems.

You should still get in touch with our team because you will require a professional solution to completely fix your problem, but we can also guide you through a simple DIY solution.

You can easily reposition loose brackets by sliding them over the wire back into their position and leaving them there until you come back into our office in Yulee.

If you have a loose wire poking the inside of your cheeks, you can grab the erase on the back of a pencil or any other blunt object to tuck it under a bracket. You can even use a wire cutter to clip any loose wire ends.

You should always take additional precautions to avoid unwanted complications from these DIY methods, but, generally speaking, they’re all safe ways you can temporarily fix any discomfort.

What to do in an orthodontic emergency?

You have to identify orthodontic emergencies and learn how to deal with them. The first thing to do is assess the damage to your teeth, mouth, or orthodontic appliance.
